Dr. Silkfingers Will See You Now
By Scarlett (Chenchen) Long
Directed by Emma Bella Bass-Lawrence
Synopsis: In this queer, time-bending one-act play, a spiraling college student named Charlotte finds herself caught between the very online pressures of 21st-century womanhood and the gothic madness of 19th-century literature. After a failed hookup and an intellectual crush on her classmate Josephine, Charlotte tumbles into a TikTok-inspired “reality shift” — transporting her from her fairy-light-lit dorm room into a dreamlike Victorian clinic.
There, she's diagnosed by the pompous Dr. Mansway with the age-old feminine malady: hysteria, said to be caused by a “wandering womb” and dangerous levels of female thinking. But her “Desired Reality” takes a seductive turn when she's referred to the enigmatic, masc-presenting lesbian physician Dr. Silkfingers (also played by Josephine). Through a ritual of glass instruments(aka the grand harmonicon), humming vibrations, and charged touch, Charlotte embarks on a sensual, hilarious, and oddly healing journey of sexual awakening — both literary and literal.
As reality blurs with fantasy and desire, "Dr. Silkfingers Will See You Now" deconstructs patriarchal medicine, mocks Victorian hysteria diagnoses, and queers the canon — all while giving Jane Eyre a vibrator.
